Ironman New Zealand
March 7, 2009
Taupo, New Zealand

Christchurch – Hanmer Springs – Christchurch
You’ll discover an excellent balance of eco-adventure and indulgence on this popular driving route. Begin by exploring Christchurch, a city with a strong arts and heritage focus, then head up the coast towards Kaikoura. Unspoiled beaches get you in the right frame of mind to enjoy the whales, seals and dolphins that live in the area – crayfish is the local specialty food. Waipara’s vineyards and olive groves are a highlight of the drive to Hanmer Springs, where hot pools, massage therapies and great restaurants will rejuvenate you. Stop for a beach picnic on the return trip to Christchurch.

Queenstown – Mt. Cook – Christchurch
You’ll see mountain landscapes in every direction on this itinerary. After the excitement of Queenstown, Arrowtown will seem beautifully quaint and calm. Explore old gold mining sites and enjoy one of the many excellent cafes. Your next destination is to reach Aoraki/ Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest peak. The high country towns of Omarama and Twizel are good stopovers along the way. Walk one of the trails that begin at Mt Cook Village, and then drive through Mackenzie Country tussockland to the glacier-blue lakes of Pukaki and Tekapo. Small museums provide interest en route to the attractions of Christchurch.

Abel Tasman National Park – 2-Day Sea Kayaking trip
Abel Tasman is renowned for its protected coastline and kayak/hike is the best way to enjoy this amazing region. When sea and weather conditions are calm sea kayaking is easy and very little skill or strength is required. Spend two days exploring some of the most beautiful coast and pristine beaches and bays in the world. If the weather is right, see the seals of the seal colony on Tonga Island where New Zealand fur seals breed. Learn about the history of the granite area as you cruise past the Tonga Quarry and the Tonga arches.

Routeburn Walk – Superb Alpine Walking
As the brochures say, Go there “Naturally” - take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints. Explore the some of New Zealand’s and the world’s most breathtaking scenery on this three day walking tour. Explore the foliage, waters and birds of Queenstown, Lake Mackenzie and Routeburn Falls.
