“The World’s Best Race, In the World’s Most Beautiful Place.”

After 22 successful years, Ironman New Zealand is the longest running international Ironman in the world.

Swim Course:
The 3.8km (2.4 mile) swim takes place in the warm, clean, fresh waters of Lake Taupo. The water temperature is normally around 19 degrees Celsius (approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit). The swim course is unique in that you can literally walk it. It is an up and back course than runs parallel to the waterfront when the bike and run course runs. It is so clear and clean that you can drink it. After the up and back legs, it swings into a marina for a beautiful exit.

Bike course:
The bike course offers a scenic two-loop course and a few challenging hills but not too demanding. One of the neat things is that you can see the steam rising off the boiling geysers lining nearly all the bike course.

Run course:
The run course is a friendly two-loop course with one hill and an overwhelmingly enthusiastic crowd in Taupo town. Then you can get down and dirty with it at the finish line with plenty of giveaways and electrifying music and even prizes for dancing. Everyone goes home a winner!!

2006 Statistics:

1490 total participants
684 New Zealand athletes
806 International athletes
60 Age Group and 10 Pro qualifying slots for Ironman Triathlon Championship, Kona Hawaii
